STRONG AS A MOTHER | POSTNATAL FITNESS | PRENATAL FITNESS
In 2014 when I became pregnant I was told that was the end of my rugby career. After fitness being a part of my entire life I was also told by many health care professionals that you shouldn’t train when you were pregnant. This went against everything I trained for - keeping my mind and body well, so why wouldn’t you do this at the most important time for your body and mind to be working at its best?
So I did A LOT of research and made a training plan for myself that I knew would be safe but also allow me to keep fit and active throughout my whole pregnancy. I was running in the pool the day before Emerys was born! I truly believe my labour went really well because of the physical and mental training I had been doing. Labour is the most physically intense thing our body will ever go through so why wouldn’t we train for it?
I always knew it would be a process to return to training and it took a long time but I started with pelvic floor rehab and also had to do some core rehab that was specific to me. The issues arose when it became impossible to return to exercise as the only time I could do something was when my partner came home from work which by that point I was exhausted. Luckily for me I found one gym manager that would let me take Emerys in with me, providing he was in a car seat, which was a game changer for me as I was able to keep my identity.
At the time I was thinking gyms are missing a trick as mums can’t train which isolates them further during a vulnerable stage and an important stage physically and mentally which exercise can help with.
A few years down the line I was back playing high level rugby and a few teammates or people I trained with became pregnant and I started helping them with their training plans, how to mentally prepare going into labour and supporting with breastfeeding afterwards. And giving advice on how they can return to playing rugby.
It was then I was like this is my job, this is what I want to do and this is Birthable.
Not long into my journey I met fellow mum Lauren at one of my classes. She was in that all too familiar position where going back to the 9-5 job seemed impossible and was looking to become a freelance videographer. Well that was it! I snapped her up and she came on board as Creative Director making sure you get the highest quality content, easily accessible and delivered from people who just get it.
We are so happy to have you join our tribe.
